up to heaven. But St Peter met him at the gate and told him to go to Purgatory. When he went there he was told to go a bit lower. When he arrived at the gates of hell and the devil saw who it was, he gave a yell of savage fury, caught up a red hot poker and stuck John a blow on the nose saying, "Begone O'Brien. I had dealings before with you, and I want no more with you." So John departed and now he roams the earth in circles, and anyone who follows him is sure to be led astray. The bright light we see circling around at night is the spot on his nose where the devil hit him with the poker. A sure way to prevent him leading one astray is for the person who sees him to take off his coat and put it on again inside out.
