    There were various hedge-schools in our district in olden-times, in Belpatrick, Collon, Co Louth.

    was held at Mossey Conn on the brow of that hill, Collon Co Meath, the pupils of this were taught by a different teacher named Burke, grandfather of the present Thomas Burke of Kells Rod. Collon -.
    The hedge-schoolmasters were paid by the children who gave him a subscription of a penny or twopence a day, according to the means of their parents.
    These teachers did not lodge in houses near the chucrh, or school, but came each day from their own homes which were sometimes a good distance from the school.
    All subjects were taught except Irish as the teachers did not know the language.
