Are you from the heavens above,
Or what brought you the way.
It's with a sigh she did reply,
    My grief I can't console,
Our patriot John Dillon he's sent to jail,
    Sighed poor old Grannuaile.
    IV
O yes John Dillon he's in jail,
And the reason we can see,
    For loving dear old Ireland,
    His native country.
    To defend the Irish people,
He tried many a plan and scheme,
Our gallant men great favour won,
    Said poor old Grannuaile.
    V
In his prison cell he does now dwell,
And his spirit went marching on,
As pure a soul as ever did roll,
In the heart of an Irish man.
Like William O'Brien long be he shine,
    His courage never failed.
He's trying to set us free at liberty.
    Said poor old Grannuaile.
    VI
    Since O'Connell's time in '29,
    We had never braver men,
They are struggling hard both night and day,
    To claim our rights again.
