are bought and sold on the streets. Many buyers from distant parts attend the fairs. They usually come by car, on the morning of the fair as there is no railway station in the town. When a buyer comes to a farmer to buy some cattle they usually spend a good while argueing. Then some neighbour steps in splits and resplits the difference, and a "dealing" is usually made.
A sum of money is usually returned by the seller. This is called "luck penny" and varies in amount with the price of the beast - about sixpence to the pound. Sheep, bonhams are alos bought and sold at this fair, but horse , ponies etc. are not. The horse fair held nearest to this district is in Limerick.
