  1. Fairs were held in Rear Cross three or four times a year long ago. Buyers came and bought the cattle. The fair was discontinued because the farmers were not getting enough of money. They gave two shillings for luck on each beast. When marking an animal they did it by mud or by clipping a piece of hair off the side. When the animal was sold the 'halter' was given to the buyer. The person who sold cattle paid toll to the buyer. This amounted to sixpence or eight pence. If a person did not sell nothing was paid.
