Money was not always given for the goods. Labour was often given in exchange for the goods. A woman would often come to the shop and spend a day washing clothes or scrubbing floors and get paid for the day by goods. People would often get goods on tick too. A person would come along daily for his goods and pay for them weekly or monthly.
