in a few cases there were no chimneys but a hole in the roof to let out the smoke. In the better houses the front of the chimneys were build of stone and mortar, in others they were made of clay and wattles. This was very dangerous as they very easily go on fire. I know of one what was called a rod [?] chimney that was burned a few years ago. I know three fairly old houses that have half-doors at present, they were in most houses long ago. The poorer houses had no glass in their windows but shutters which they opened to let in daylight. Others had what was called wire netting with a shutter outside to keep out storms and rain when necessary. For firing, timber was the most plentiful and easily got but where there were many boys in the family they cut turf. The light mostly used was rush dip and it was made at home by the housepeople.
