  1. Before the Firbolgs came to Ireland there was a race of Pigmies in the country who when the invasion came built these moats, raths or forts as hiding places and means of escape from the big invaders.
    They built them in a circular shape with a hole in the centre and lived in them and they never appeared until after dark which accounts for the legend of the fairies.
    There are supposed to underground passages connecting all these local moats. There are five moats in the immediate vicinity :- Gotoon, Portbeg, Kilfrush, Coolscart, Lodge. They are not in
