- ST. BRIGID'S CROSSES were made sometimes of rushes and more often of straw. They were thus shaped (Diagram) and very artistically done and the leg was left to stick the cross firmly in the beam or rafter where it was held. The age of some houses could be reckoned from these crosses for one was made every St. Brigid's Eve and stuck up beside last year's one and the number of crosses told the number of years.Others burned the old one as they put up the new one.
