    Castle was occupied it would almost have been surrounded by a morass so it could be attacked only on one side. It was a fine Castle of the Anglo Norman type. A lofty Keep stood on the western side the outer wall is still perfect. It is said to have been blown up with Gunpowder in the year 1645 by Sir Hardeess Waller of Castletown.
    The eastern yard of the Courtyard is in a good state of preservation, the Battlements being still standing.
    A round tower with a circular stair is still to be seen on the north. The stair is supposed to lead to an underground passage, so they could get water in time of seige.
    It is said to have been built by O'Donovan before the Anglo Norman invasion.
    The Castle of Ballyculhane on what was then the bank of the Maigue being surrounded by a Moat traces of which may still be seen. It is a very large ruin being about 100 yards square its walls are about 30 ft high. Unlike Shanpallas Castle it has no Keep its highest point resembles a Church belfry. It was built by a member of the Purcell family soon after the Anglo Normal invasion, and held by them under the earl of Desmond
