  1. Old Songs

I knew an old thatcher a long time ago.

I knew an old thatcher a long time ago.
He was the jolliest old creature as you would wish to know
He sang an old ditty throughout the long day,
    It went daddy-dum-diddy, O diddy-dum day.
The jokers around got a twist of his song.
They hummed and they hawed at it all the day long.
Daddy-dum-diddy one bright boy would say
    Another would answer O diddy-dum-day.
In school if a youngster gor mazed with a sum
In a fit of abstraction he forwith would hum
    Daddy-dum-diddy the favourite lay
    And a class-mate would echo O diddy-dum-day.
Some time in the night even now you will hear
Some poor harrassed farmer going home from the fair
To keep up his spirits as prices dont pay
