He started one morning at 5 o'c. from his house in Killavoy to walk to Cork, a distance of about 30 miles He reached the city at 8 o'c, taking only 3 hrs. to cover the 30 miles. DAN LEHANE, Lyre, Banteer, was a famous mower. He used to mow 1 acre 2 rds and 12 perches in a day.
- Another well-known athlete was JOHN MURPHY Bolomore, Banteer, who used compete, [?], in the walking matches at all the local sports. He could walk a mile in five minutes. He died three years ago and was buried in Old Kilcorney Graveyard, Banteer.
DANIEL CASHMAN Lackloun, Banteer who is still living was a great runner. It is said that he could run a mile easily in four minutes.
MRS CRONIN Kilinacrone, Banteer, carried sixteen stone of meal up a hill on her back for about a quarter of a mile. She died about twenty years ago. She was born at Cnoc Dubh, Cullen and was known locally as "Nóirín Caoch."(continues on next page)- Collector
