- (continued from previous page)word to the mother. She was surprised to get this news from the teacher and she inquired of the child the cause of her absence from school. The little girl told of the beautiful lady, who asked her into the fort each morning to rock the baby for her.
The mother pretended nothing to the child but told her to ask the lady of the next time she met her for a cure for their cattle that were sick and dying. The child died as she was told and brought home a bottle next evening with instructions from the lady that the contents should not be used on anything but the sick cattle.
The mother was a clever woman and she washed the little girl from head to toe with the contents of the bottle and then used what was left on the cattle. Next morning when the child was passing by the fort she was terrified to meet an enraged old hag instead of the usualy beautiful lady. The wicked old woman said to her "Ah Mary, your mother was too clever for me but I'll have your first born baby." It is said that Mary never married.- Collector
