  1. There were two knids of bacacaig in this district long ago, namely the respectable bacac and the bacac that carried the "bag" and was always begging for alms.
The better class bacac who was known here was called "Buck" Fitz. He wore a gold chain and watch and the story says, "he was dressed in a very respectable suit of cloth". At that time there were no Post Offices and no Postman and the bacac was the news carrier and the storyteller. For instance, if a man from Ballyvourney settled down here and he also had friends in Brookstown or Fermoy, the bacac carried messages, gave statistics of children (number, ages, etc) cattle, sheep, acres of wheat, etc. from friend to friend. He was a very welcome visitor and never remained longer than one night in each house. He was a busy man, well educated but of a roving disposition.
