  1. It seems the population was in or about twice what it is now. The old walls and ruins can yet be pointed out where families lived then.
    The blight came off in one night in the middle of June when the gardens were in full bloom. A number of our people died of a disease called the "fever and ague." I remember some telling about it. In a mountain path from Gortnagown to Clydagh near to Shrone's Lake within two hundred yards of the Track of the Bull or Rian an Daibh, a travelling mother and daughter were found dead locked in each other's arms, from hunger or ague. They were begging for food around the day
