  1. In the years of the great famine of 1846-1847 all Ireland was affected by it because the potato crop failed. Fortunately Clonakilty did not suffer because the potato did not fail and people came from all parts of Ireland to buy potatoes. People use to walk to Clonakilty and all along the roads they used to be found dead with starvation, and people used to ask each other where they were going and they used to say to "Clonakilty God help us" and to this day Clonakilty has that name.
