- (continued from previous page)Thomastown, and it is also paid at the horse fair in Kilkenny. The tole is usuallly about three pence for cattle and about a penny for sheep. When a bargain is made the agreement is made by striking hands or by spitting. The cattle when sold are marked with raddle or by clipping their side with a scissors. When an animal is sold the rope or halter is left to the buyer. The outstanding fair of the year in Borris is the 15th August, in Graiguenamanagh Michaelmas day, in New Ross first fair in May, in Waterford May fair, in Kilkenny and Thomastown the summer fairs are the most noted.
