When the potato crop failed the poor people were so hungry that they spent the rent money on Indian meal. and thus they were evicted. Some of the English landlords were very generous and fed and clothed the poor evicted people. The chief food used by the people instead of potatoes was turnips and milk. Another food they used was "flumary". It consisted of grains of oatmeal which were left in water, until the liquid had a sour taste. This they boiled until it thickened and it tasted like the cornflour we use nowadays.
