   had potatoes in store, so that when the famine came, they had plenty to eat. The people that did not gather the potatoes were the first to die during the famine years.
   Most of the poor people died of cholera, and it was a very common occurrence to see a cartload of bodies being brought to the local burial ground and buried without even a sheet to cover them.
   The government gave very little relief to the people, only giving four shillings, or a stone of meal to each family, no matter how big the family was. A man named John Dempsey, who came to Boyle during the Cromwellian plantation, built a wooden hut on the Sligo Road, and he fed and boarded the children
