  1. The potato, which was first introduced into Ireland by Sir Walter Raleigh during the reign of Queen Eligabeth, was the staple food of the Irish people for generations
    It is planted in Spring either in ridges or drills. The ridges are turned up by a man with a spade and are called "Taobods". The drills are turned with a plough.
    The sets or "skillanes" are then put into the ridges at an even distance apart and covered with farmyard manure. The ridge is then closed in and covered up with earth.
    After a few weeks the tubers begin to grow and drive up the stalks through the ridge. Then fresh earth is put on the ridge to protect the stalks from frost which is fatal to the potato crop in its early stages.
