suitable he asks the seller what price he has on them; the seller asks a price generally a pound or more in advance of what he really expects to get; the buyer next makes a bid below their value, a farmer standing nearby tries to get the buyer or prospective buyer to advance on his price and at the same time endeavours to persuade his fellow farmer to lower his price, so as to clinch a bargain agreeable to both of them. This is called "splitting the difference". When the cattle are marked to show that they are sold, the next thing is to get the cattle into the wagon at the railway station. This work is generally all over before eleven o'clock. It is only when business is over that farmers meet friends that they will not meet again until next fair and so they spend a pleasant and innocent day until it is time to go home.
