- Marriages occur most frequently before Shrove Tuesday. Friday and Saturday are looked upon as unlucky days. The months regards as unlucky are May, June, July and August.In olden times when a pair got married a certain sum of money, known as a "fortune" was given by the girls parents to the boy. If there were satisfied they bought the ring and arranged for the day of their marriage. After the marriage there was a feast held in the bride's house.
