  1. The old people tell many stories about the famine of 1846 and '47. After the famine there was not much food in the country. A lot of people died during the famine from hunger. There was not much food got from foreign countries. The people would die from hunger only for the landlords. The landlord of Ballymote was very kind, to his tenants. It was Sir Robert Gore Booth who owned the district in those years. He lived in Lisadel. He gave oat-meal to his tenants. He got it divided equally. He gave so much for each person. He also gave them timber for fire-stuff. He was very kind to the people.
