Some people say that if you cry on that day you will cry for some part of every day for the whole year.
It is also said that if you give money away on New Year's Day you will be giving it away every day in the year.
Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. Everyone goes to Mass on Ash Wednesday. It is called Ash Wednesday because when the people are at Mass the priest puts blessed ashes on the people's forehead with his thumb.
