- Long ago in the olden times all the old people had a great many cures but the doctors would not give in to these cures. They would rather see you buying some of their own. These are the cures that the old people practised. For a stye in the eye, pull ten thorns and throw away one of them and then point the remainder at your eye. The cure for a sore throat was to rub goose's seam on it. The cure for a foul mouth is to bring the person to a person that never had seen his father. The cure for the whooping cough is to drink the leavings of a ferret. Also the cure for the rose is to go to the seventh son. Some of the people have the cure for the palate of the mouth and it is handed down from father to son.
