- (continued from previous page)their work in the fields. This was a narrow escape for the mistress & young man & she was afraid to bring him to the house for dinner after this. Instead she brought him his dinner to the field where he was working. He had two white horses & when she saw these white horses she knew where to go with the dinner. The farmer's boy found this out & in order to get the good dinner for themselves he put two white sheets on his own horses.
The mistress mistaking these horses for those of her young man never found out her mistake till she was actually in the field & then she was too late to turn back. She came up to where they were working & laid down the basket
The farmer was surprised & asked why she had brought them the dinner that day anymore than any other day. She said the day was so fine that she thought it would be pleasanter for them to have dinner in the open than in the house.
"Perhaps you are right," said the farmer, "best sit down & eat it." Down they sat - opened the basket - & sure enough there was a dinner good enough for(continues on next page)- Collector
