One day, three Colonels, one Scotch, one English & one Irish, got up one after the other & abused Dan to their own satisfaction & to the satisfaction of other English members. When the third had finished Dan stood up & asked if he could reply & he was allowed. He replied in the following manner =

Three poets in three distant ages born Greece, Italy & England did adorn
The first in majesty of thought surpassed The next in grandeur & in both the last The force of nature could no further go And to make a third she joined the former two,
