  1. (continued from previous page)
this opening was latted with rods. The floors were made of clay, strewed with rushes underneath, which was a collection of nasty rushes. Furniture was very scanty and bedding must have been very uncomfortable. A straw matress and a log of wood for a bolster and a pillow of chaff was considered a luxury.
I heard a description of a house belonging to a man named Pether. The house was about 18 x 12 feet, divided into two apartments and a mystery room. There was a "lean-to" containing the family bed. The second part of the house was divided from the kitchen, by a sort of partition. The room to the back of this partition was called the mystery room.
The fowl came in and laid their eggs in the family bed and roosted in the kitchen. The pig also claimed the bedroom. He would come in and lie down under the bed. It was wonderful how the people lived in such dirty unsanitary conditions long ago.
