“Patch work quilts were made in every house they were made by the women...”
Patch work quilts were made in every house they were made by the women on a quilting frame. All pieces of cloth left over in the house were put by. when the quilt was being made the pieces were got and sewed together generally red flannel and black then lined with a worn blanket or a linen sheet on the quilting frame. Sometimes the cotton pieces were worked in a design perhaps in the middle a black or red diamond cloth on a white ground. Sometimes there were patches each side of the linen quilts so that both sides could be left up. I saw a red quilt in Mrs McPadden's Derrinvona a black design on the red cloth with red thread sewing like this:-- You are not logged in, but you are welcome to contribute a transcription anonymously.
