Prugee" when calling the cow home...

    (continued from previous page)
A person passing at milking time should say "God bless the cows."

"Blessed Palm" is tied with red ribbon or red cloth to the beam in the byre to protect the cattle from being overlooked

"A horse shoe" is tied over the byre door.
Horse-shoe nails are tied in the cattle's tails

On the first Friday morning after a calf is calved the right ear is pierced with a knife.

When a cow is being milked for the first time, she is milked into a vessel in which a halfpenny, a penny and shilling are placed.

When fixing a hen's nest a horseshoe is placed under the nest.

The cow gives her milk more freely if the milkmaid sings Thus:-
"By the Donn-cow meek and quiet
She has set her stool so low
And she sings a gentle measure
As she makes the white milk flow."

When the cow kicks the can and spills the milk the loss of the milk is not regretted as it is given as the reason. "The fairies were thirsty".
