    As some spring wells are wont to do
    And whose waters oft doth pass

    These lines were handed down from father to son over fifty years ago. The incident must have occurred over a century ago. The old man's version of the circumstances which led to the closing of the well is that the Carrowheel house-occupiers resented trespass + chiefly Mass people calling to the well. As a result of unheeded repeated warnings, the well was closed up. Soon after the lines on other page were penned beside the closed well. The occupiers referred to, got highly indignant, and sent for Mr. Swift. When he arrived he was asked to apologise. Not alone did
