  1. The local landlord of my district was Charles Maxwell. He came from the north of Ireland. He was very good to the Catholics although being a protestant. He was a very kind man. He never evicted anyone. He was landlord for sixty years. The tenants approached him on one occasion, and asked him to reduce their rent, and he reduced it 5/- on the pound. Those who were unable to pay their rent were not thrown out of their possessions but were made cut turf. He resided in St Clarens, and he was landlord for all the estate which was very big. It contained about 5000 acres
