  1. There was a man footing turf in the time of Cromwell in Gorteen below Shrule when Cromwell's soldiers were after a priest.
    The man saw the priest coming and he ran towards the bulrushes and took off his clothes and give them to the priest to put on him and told him to go footing the turf until the soldiers had passed by.
    Some hungry poor fellow working for a farmer in Clare once said
    "My heart is scalded both night and morning
    From that black saucepan that makes the dip
    A grain of flour and a sup of water
    And the devil scald them that wouldn't make it thick".
