   from the shore,
   E'er I trod the land of Eire like a stricken giant's roar,
   Face to face I now have seen it, and I stand in deadly fear,
   As a mariner may shudder when the hurricane is near.

   I have seen it in the faces of the anxious peasant throng,
   I have heard it in their converse like a sob in some old song;
   In their buying and their sellings, in their traffic and their gain,
   In their notes of mirth and pleasure is a minor key of pain.

   I have seen the pilgrims thronging to the holy well to pray,
   And the tale of pending ruin runs through every thing they say;
   For the people's food is blighted - signs and portent's gather fast
   Of the coming want and sickness - we have known them in the past.
