   Roinn Roinn Postáil

   I stand beneath the shadow of an old familiar hill,
   And watch the rising harvet moon while the air is deadly still;
   And as odour keen assails me from the bosom of the night -
   Well I know that baleful odour - 'tis the fell-potato blight.

   Nature's danger-signal warns me of the wrath that is to come,
   And a shadow falls around me like the shadow of a tomb,
   Bringing ghastly recollections of the tale of Forty-seven;
   Of the death and dire destruction when a nation's heart was riven

   I had heard the distant rumbling of disaster
