It seems tolerably clear, however that the section of the present highway from Lucan to Ballydowd has been in existence for four centuries at the least. The adjoining section, Ballydowd to Palmerstown, may not be earlier than 1650 and the next section that reaches Dublinwards between Palmerstown and Chapelizod appears to belong to a later date.
