    it had turned to a right either close to Ballydowd or beside the gate of the Hermitage Golf Club. If that was so then approximately until the middle years of the 17th century only a bridle path ribboned its way from Ballydowd past the Hermitage Links to Palmerstown and moved off by the right at the last named village until it joined the main road to Dublin, in those days a considerable distance South of Chapelizod.
