- Potatoes are grown on my farm at home. Two acres are sown under potatoes each year on my farm. My father prepares the ground. Manure is put out and it is spread id you are going to sow them in the flat. The potatoes are sow nostly in drills around this district. First of all the ground in which the potatoes are to be sown is coscarified. Then the ground is ploughed When the ground is ploughed, it is harrowed twice, and then the drills are opened. The manure is then pit out and spread. First of all the potatoes that are there since the year before are chosen. The seed is picked out, and the table potatoes are put into the house. If the seed is small they are not cut but they are usually out. When the seed is out is is called a 'suollain'. The person who is cutting the 'suollain' must be sure that there is at least one eye in the potato. People always help one another to sow the potatoes. When the potatoes are overground they are hoed twice then they would be 'raised' and left there till they are dug. The name of the various kinds of potatoes are, the Epicures, the early, Rose, the Arran Banner, the Ker Pinks, the champion. All of these grow well in my district.(continues on next page)
