- We have a churn at home it is about three feet high it is about one foot six inches wide at the top and about one foot ten inches wide in the bottom. The sides are a little wider in the bottom and narrow in the middle and getting wider in the top. It is about fifty years old. The parts of the churn are the lid, the bottom, the sides, and the handle.
We churn twice a week in the summer and once a week in the Winter. My mother does the churning. If any stranger comes in he helps by giving a few brashes. This is a sign that he will not take away the luck of the cows. People used to be afraid of certain people long ago. They were blamed for taking away the luck from cattle. So to prevent people thinking that they could take away luck strangers going into a house where churning was going on always helped with it. Thus the custom grew and still exists. Churning takes about three quarters of an hour. Churning is done by hand. The dash is usually moving upwards and downwards.
