    There was an old school in Kilcoran, parish of Tang and county of Westmeath where school was taught long ago. The school was built with larch poles and galvanized iron. The scholars were seated on stools and wooden blocks while school was being carried on. The teacher's name was Patrick Nally. At that time the pupils wrote with nails and slates. The blackboard was a big slate and the teacher wrote with a six inch nail. The teacher lived in a hut beside the school, and he was paid by the pupils. They used bring him eggs and food.

    Long ago in Drumraney there was an old school. There were several teachers in it and their names were Miss Webb, Mr Bone and Mr Flanagan. The school was different to what it is now. There were no seats, they had to sit on the floor. There was no such thing as steel pens or pencils. They used to write with quills and make the ink out of elderberrys, and they used to write on slates with slate pencils. The teachers had no yearly pay only what they got from the
