- In former times boots were never worn until a child had reached the age of ten or twelve years. Shoes were never worn until about thirty years ago. Old women still continue to wear boots instead of shoes. In summertime nearly all children go barefoot and adults also go barefoot when working in the bog. There is nothing special done with the water in which the feet are washed or there are no customs or beliefs connected with it. Boots are repaired locally but are not made locally they are bought in the shop. In former times there were two shoe-makers in Borrisokane whereas there is only one now. At the present time he does not make boots but he repairs them. This has not been a tradition with his family.
