  1. There are very few local poets nowadays there is hardly any good local poetry to be read now. There is an old saying that poets are born not made. Years ago there was a poet who made a fine poem entitled "The Old Walls of Liscarroll". This man's name was OCallaghan Gaynor. The poetry began like this.
    "Those ruined old walls
    Those grand old walls
    In stately splendour stand
    Their name historic ranks among
    The proudest in the land
For there it was that heroes fought
    And fell in freedom's cause
In by gone days when Erin groaned
    'Neath cruel English laws.
In later years a new poet came into prominence his name was Timothy OConnell. OConnell composed a nice poem entitled "Paddy 'Carthy's dead". Paddy was a local tinker who was very popular in Liscarroll. In Freemount D. J. Foley is the chief poet. He sends his poetry to the "Weekly Examiner. But any of these could not equal Thomas Davis or Oliver Goldsmith.
