  1. "Bird Lore"
    The commonest wild birds in our own district are:-- blackbirds, thrushes, magpies, cuckoos, wrens, robins, swallows and skylarks.
    The swallows fly away to Northern Africa and other warmer countries in the winter. In the middle of April the swallows come again to our district, and four weeks later these little birds begin to build their nests. Some swallows build their nests high up on walls of barns and houses. The nests are made of mud, mixed with short pieces of straw. When the nest is made the swallows line it with feathers and soft grass. Swallows lay from four to six eggs. When the swallows fly low it is a sign of rain.
    Robins build their nests in the sides of ditches and banks. The mother bird lays from four to six eggs, with white shells spotted
