- Local HeroesThe men of Crookhaven were noted oarsmen and sailors. The following account was told by local men. About sixty years ago John Driscoll, Thomas Beasley and Stephen Downey set sail from Wales in a sailing vessel with a cargo of coal for South America. They had a terrible passage and the gas of the coal set the cargo on fire. They went to the Falkland Islands and unloaded their cargo. Then they went on their journey. They wanted a cargo of manure and had to wait six months for it. Once again they set sail for Hamburg, a place in Germany, with the manure. It took them two years before they came back to Crookhaven. They also were great oarsmen. Many years ago there was a regatta in Berehaven and a boat went from Crookhaven to pull in it.
