I was up with a cow that was ailing, - for God knows all things best:
But I couldn't get rest for a moment, for I felt there was something wrong;
I kept walking about and watching, and I hadn't to wait too long.For there by the rising moonlight I saw again and again
A kind of a moving shadow creeping along the lane;
I wasn't deceived, for I guessed it all; for coming steady-slow
Was a band of midnight soldiers, & I knew they were out for Joe.But now was my time of action; as a friend I could choose my way;
So I flew like a flash to the window of the room where I knew he lay:-
"Joe, Joe, get up! the soldiers are on you. fly!
Away to the broomy hill & I'll take them off your tracks or die!I waited in the shadow of the fir-trees till they came,
Like thieves who were out for plunder, or a sleuth-hound in its game,
I watched them creeping and stealing like the flow of a rising tide,
But their prey was off and in safety on yonder mountain side.They stayed not for a moment but dashed wildly at the door,
And broke it in an instant as they'd often done before;
Then bursting into the kitchen and rushing madly on
One shouted, "The nest is here, boys, but the bird is fairly gone."And then a horrid clamouring with oaths and curses rose,
