cross on the bread they were making for Good Friday in
    memory of Our Lord.
In the olden days oaten cakes were very common about here. People grew the oats themselves and got it ground. They made it by getting the oaten meal and then they wet it with boiling water. When oat cakes were made they were very hard and sweet.
A cross was put on the bread because they said it kept the crust on. It was baked in a pot called a bake pan. Griddle bread used to be made too, and baked on a griddle, and it was very nice.
