  1. some of the children about here were taught in what they called "Hedge Schools".
    The children were very poor and sometimes they used to sit on the floor, when they were being taught.
    The children had slates, and they were shown to write on these. They had some books but the books were very scarce.
    The teacher went around to farmer's barns and taught some of the children. They only learned reading, and writing as they had no proper books to learn anything else. Sometimes the children brought money to the teacher. In Killowen townland there was an old school taught in a barn. (Killowen is about 2 miles from Gorey.)
