  1. Marriages take place locally before Lent and Advent. They scarcely ever take place on Shrove Tuesday.
Shrove Tuesday gets the name of Pancake Tuesday, because it is an old custom for people to have pan-cakes for tea on that night.
Every farmer's daughter receives money as dowry.
Some people tie old shoes to the newly-married couple's car for good luck. Showers of rice are also thrown on them.
A wedding feast is generally held in the bride's house, to which the neighbours are invited.
