  1. Tradition associates Maeve, Queen of Connaught with Athlone. The name Ath Luain is supposed to mean "the ford of the loins", recalling the fight that occurred between the two bulls after the Táin.
Maeve had a Summer residence at Innis Cloraun, now Quaker Island in Lough Ree. One day, while bathing here, she was killed by being struck with a stone throw at her from the opposite shore by the son of the King of Ulster. Some say she is buried in Cruachan.
