  1. There are inscribed stones at St. Peter's Laundry Gate and over the door-way of the Bank of Ireland in Pearse St. Over the laundry gate at St. Peter's Convent there is a grotesque figure known as Sheelah na Gig. There is another such figure in Clonmacnoise. It consists of a human head joined without any neck or body to a species of human legs.
    Under this figure is a flat stone with the name "St. Peter's Port", and under that again a man's head with the initals J.B. St. Peter's Port is said to mean St. Peter's Gate. J.B. means Jack Booth.
